Google TV's First Apps

Google announced some of the initial content partners for Google TV: Turner Broadcasting, NBC Universal, HBO, Netflix, Amazon. The list is far from impressive, but this is just the beginning.

At launch, Google TV will run Android 2.1 and will include Chrome 5.0 and Adobe Flash 10.1. Google will pre-load a few high-quality apps like Pandora, Netflix, NBA, while the Android Market will be available early next year, after Google releases the SDK.

The good news is that web apps could work well on a TV if they are properly designed. YouTube Leanback is a great example of web app optimized for Google TV. Since it's not easy to develop web apps for TVs, Google offers some guidelines: TV interfaces should be simple, navigation and content are very important, the app should take advantage of the wide screen.

Google TV has an Apple-esque site and will start to be available this month on devices made by Sony and Logitech. "One of our goals with Google TV is to finally open up the living room and enable new innovation from content creators, programmers, developers and advertisers," says Google's Ambarish Kenghe.

  1. While not completely impressive, this is truly a baby step in the right direction. I can't wait to get my hands on one!

  2. Why load an outdated, insecure version of Chrome (5.0)? Shouldn't it use the latest stable build, auto-updating along with the rest of the system?

  3. I don't know, isn't Netflix and hulu about 90% of what people will use this for? Seems impressive enough to me.

  6. Do anyone know why do we need TV to watch Google TV in the age of computers? Does Google try to save TV?

  7. Wondering how can an Android system could be tweaked for a TV.

Anyway, go to Google TV website and rollover the logo. But it's using Flash, not HTML5 Canvas. Too bad.

  8. You still have to pay for all the stuff. You need a Netflix subscription, nepstar, HBO, or all the others apps you can put on. Is not like you can get TV for free only paid by commercial. The real goal should be to get tv without to pay to cable companies, advertisement should pay for it..

  11. Just hooked mine up this weekend, pretty slick. Much better than pulling out the laptop to check mail, surf youtube, etc. Waaay to many things to try out on it, and with more apps and content coming in the future I just hope the 1st rev hardware isn't obsoleted soon!

  16. I have had it about a month. LOVE IT. Have the iphone app for remote, love the keyboard. Just waiting for access to the android market. Best idea ever. Also, waiting on HULU to support the GTV browser. I don't like amazon charging to watch cable tv shows that I get with my service, that sucks. On demand movies no problem, but not free TV shows. ABC, NBC, CBS also do not support the GTV browser. In time, this will be better than the best idea ever. :)
